The decomposition includes both decay onto the attracting set and the approach to the asymptotically periodic state on the attractor.     The asymmetric nature of the fluid film stiffness and damping properties in rotors supported on fluid film bearings causes a forward or a backward whirl depending on the bearing parameters and the speed of the rotor. A rotor was designed to exhibit backward synchronous whirl. The rotor-bearing system exhibited split criticals, and a backward whirl was observed between the split criticals.     Biopsy tract seeding in musculoskeletal sarcomas: myth or reality?

    Background: It is a common practice in oncology in general and musculoskeletal oncology that the biopsy tract must be resected together with the tumor while performing limb-sparing surgery. Our study aims to assess the need for routine excision of biopsy scars in musculoskeletal malignancies by analyzing the presence of tumor in the biopsy tracts. Methods: We conducted a prospective study from January 2021 to April 2023, including 48 soft tissue and bone sarcoma patients. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was administered to all cases of Ewings sarcoma and osteosarcoma. All of them underwent surgical resection with appropriate reconstruction. Biopsy tracts were sent separately and analyzed for tumor infiltration. Results: Two of the 48 patients included in the study had tumor deposits in their biopsy tracts. One patient with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma and another patient with high-grade myxoid liposarcoma had tumor seeding in their biopsy tracts. Conclusions: The rate of biopsy tract seeding in our study was 4.2% (2 out of 48). Even though this might seem very less, it is still significant considering the rarity of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Despite the low risk of tumor seeding, it is advisable to continue routinely excising the biopsy tract. Whether inappropriately placed biopsy tracts warrant an amputation instead of limb salvage is a question that will be best answered in the future with large-scale prospective randomized studies

    HPTLC fingerprint profile of methanol extract of the marine red alga Portieria hornemannii (Lyngbye) (Silva)

    The present study was aimed to develop the high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprint profile of methanol extracts of marine red alga Portieria hornemannii (Lyngbye) (Silva). A HPTLC method for the separation of the active constituents in extracts has been developed and TLC of these extracts on silica gel pre-coated aluminum plates of Merck by the automatic TLC applicator and using the solvent system n-hexane:ethyl acetate (60:40 v/v) was performed. HPTLC profiling of the extract confirm about the presence of various phytochemicals. HPTLC finger print scanned at 490 nm for methanol and ethyl acetate algal extracts revealed 13 peaks with Rf values in the range of 0.16 to 0.99 respectively. The HPTLC method for routine quality control of present species can be carried out using this method for extracts of plant and serve in qualitative, quantitative and was appropriate for standardization of the extract

    The antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of the red seaweed, Chondrococcus hornemannii and Spyridia fusiformis was analyzed through two different radicals such as nitricoxide and hydroxyl radicals. The extract from S. fusiformis had the highest antioxidant potential, which was also found to be equivalent to the antioxidant activities of some commercial antioxidants (BHT and L-ascorbic acid). The antioxidant assay was performed at the concentration ranging from 100 500 L. The present study confirms that C. hornemannii and S.fusiformis received special attention and used as a source of natural antioxidant

    Knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer, its prevention and attitude towards human papillomavirus vaccine among medical students

    Background: Cervical cancer is still one of the most common cancers affecting females in India, leading to a lot of mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study was to assess the awareness of the human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and vaccination among the medical students of a tertiary care teaching hospital.Methods: A total 300 final year I and II medical students were requested to complete a questionnaire regarding cervical cancer, primary and secondary preventive measures and attitude of students towards HPV vaccination and the answers were then analysed.Results: Among 300 medical students, 46.6% were males and 53.4% were females. Most of them were aware of the common risk factors like early marriage (92.7%), multiple partners (99%), multiparity (83.3%) and HPV exposure (85.7%). Most were aware of the cervical cancer symptoms like offensive vaginal discharge (70%), irregular vaginal bleeding (92.7%) and postcoital bleeding (80.3%). 90% were aware that cervical cancer is preventable and 74% were aware that vaccine is available in India. 70% were aware about the best age to vaccinate is 9-13 years. About 10% were already vaccinated and all were females. Out of 270 students who have not administered HPV vaccine, 53.4% didn’t take the vaccine because of lack of awareness. High cost (18.8%), fear of side effects (13.8%) and doubt on efficacy (14%) were the other reasons reported for non-administration of vaccines.Conclusions: The study showed that there were gaps in knowledge regarding HPV infection and vaccination existed amongst the medical students. So, awareness among the students should be created and a more integrated teaching regarding various aspects of HPV infection, cervical cancers and its prevention needs to be introduced in the medical education system

    Targeted therapy of advanced gallbladder cancer and cholangiocarcinoma with aggressive biology: eliciting early response signals from phase 1 trials.

    PurposePatients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma (CC) and gallbladder carcinoma (GC) have few therapeutic options for relapsed disease. methods: Given the overall poor prognosis in this population and the availability of novel targeted therapies, we systematically analyzed the characteristics and outcomes for GC and CC patients treated on phase I trials with an emphasis on targeted agents and locoregional therapies.ResultsOf 40 treated patients (GC=6; CC=34; median age, 60 years), 8 (20%) had stable disease (SD) > 6 months, 3 (8%) partial response (PR), on protocols with hepatic arterial drug infusion and anti-angiogenic, anti-HER-2/neu or novel MAPK/ERK kinase (MEK) inhibitors. Median progression-free survival (PFS) on phase I trials was 2.0 months (95% CI 1.7, 2.8) versus 3.0 months (95% CI 2.4, 5.0), 3.0 months (95% CI 2.3, 4.6), and 3.0 months (95% CI 2.4, 3.9) for their first-, second-, and last-line FDA-approved therapy. In univariate analysis, >3 metastatic sites, elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (>56IU/L), serum creatinine (>1.6mg/dL), and CA19-9 (>35U/mL) were associated with a shorter PFS. Mutational analysis revealed mutation in the KRAS oncogene in 2 of 11 patients (18%). The SD >6 months/PR rate of 28% was seen with hepatic arterial infusion of oxaliplatin, and inhibitors of angiogenesis, HER-2/neu or MEK.ConclusionsThe PFS in phase I trials was similar to that of the first, second, and last-line therapy (P=0.95, 0.98, 0.76, respectively) with FDA-approved agents given in the advanced setting, emphasizing a role for targeted agents in a clinical trials setting as potentially valuable therapeutic options for these patients

    Germline PTPRD mutations in Ewing sarcoma: biologic and clinical implications.

    Ewing sarcoma occurs in children, adolescents and young adults. High STAT3 levels have been reported in approximately 50% of patients with Ewing sarcoma, and may be important in tumorigenesis. Protein tyrosine phosphatase delta (PTPRD) is a tumor suppressor that inhibits STAT3 activation. To date, while somatic mutations in PTPRD have been reported in diverse tumors, germline mutations of PTPRD have not been investigated in Ewing sarcoma or other cancers. We identified a novel germline mutation in the PTPRD gene in three of eight patients (37.5%) with metastatic Ewing sarcoma. Although the functional impact in two of the patients is unclear, in one of them the aberration was annotated as a W775stop germline mutation, and would be expected to lead to gene truncation and, hence, loss of the STAT3 dephosphorylation function of PTPRD. Since STAT3 is phosphorylated after being recruited to the insulin growth factor receptor (IGF-1R), suppression of IGF-1R could attenuate the enhanced STAT3 activation expected in the presence of PTPRD mutations. Of interest, two of three patients with germline PTPRD mutations achieved durable complete responses following treatment with IGF-1R monoclonal antibody-based therapies. Our pilot data suggest that PTPRD germline mutations may play a role in the development of Ewing sarcoma, a disease of young people, and their presence may have implications for therapy
